White Board Wednesday: Domain Names

What is a domain name?
A domain name is simply your address on the internet.

Why do I need one?
You need a domain name so that your web content can be found on the internet.

Where can I get one?
Use a reputable domain registrar! 4dollarwebhosting.com is not a good choice.

Domain Mythbusters

1. The more domains I own, the more visible my website will be.
2. My domain has to end in .COM to be significant.
3. As long as my website is up, my domain is safe.
4. I should respond to every domain letter I get in the mail.

  1. Question: our church has a .com with our city name in it and a .church that doesn’t. I would like to make the .church our primary but is there more seo value in the city name .com? Should I just use one? Just to be clear I have churchnameandcity.com (this one is already listed in online directories and news stories), churchname.church, and cityname.church. Advice for max local seo?

    1. Hey Mike – thanks for asking! Based on our research, there is little technical SEO value in using a specific TLD over another. While you could make the switch to .CHURCH as your go-to domain, you’d want to be very strategic in how you do that, since your current .COM already has some SEO juice. You would want to create 301 redirects for each page on your old domain that point to the same page on the new domain. See this article for more info on 301 redirects: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/93633?hl=en

There is no way to switch domains and maintain 100% of your SEO juice, you will lose some. However, if you really feel the need to switch, 301 redirects can help minimize the loss. Here’s another good article on this topic: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/choose-a-domain-name-maximum-seo/158951/

      Hope this is helpful!

  3. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and appearance. I must say you’ve done a very good job with this. Additionally, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Chrome. Superb Blog!
