Church Hack: Send text updates to members for free!
Did you know that more than 97% of text messages are opened and read within minutes of being sent? So here’s the question… Are you looking for a fast, efficient and FREE way to communicate with church members, without giving away personal cell phone numbers in a group text message? We have an answer!
Choosing an effective way to communicate with your church body is essential. But, we are all inundated with different forms of communication on a daily basis. We get everything from emails to social media notifications, even phone calls are becoming easier and easier to just ignore!
So what’s the one thing that people read, usually within minutes of receiving? The answer is Text Messages!
Unfortunately, though, you may have figured out that you only have two options when sending messages to large amounts of people from your cell phone. Your first option is to simply send everyone a text message. But you can see how this could take quite a while, especially if you’re trying to get your message to the entire church. Another option is to send a group message, but your phone probably limits the number of people you can send your message to and you don’t want to share private phone numbers with your entire group!
There are also plenty of paid services out there that offer to send a message to your subscribers, but what if I told you there was a way you could do that for free!
Here’s how you can do that:
Most of us have used twitter before, we’re all familiar with sending a message that is 140 characters or less to our audience. But did you know that you can send text updates through twitter? In order for someone to receive those updates, all they need to do is subscribe- -and they don’t have to have a twitter account! You can encourage your congregation to subscribe to your twitter account via text, or you can set up a twitter account that’s specifically used for text updates!
In order to subscribe, all you have to do is text the word follow, along with your church twitter handle to 40404. For example, if your twitter handle is ABCChurch, just text the words “follow abcchurch” to the number 40404
Any message that you post to the twitter account that’s been followed will now go directly to the cell phone number of anyone that has subscribed!
You can unsubscribe by sending “unfollow abcchurch” or whatever your twitter handle is, you can even turn notifications off by texting the word “off” to 40404
This is a great way to get messages out to church members about schedule changes or activity reminders, you could even set up different accounts for Youth Groups or their parents! It’s a great way to stay in contact without breaking the bank!
